Inonotus Obliquus
Inonotus obliquus is a fungus of the Hymenochaetaceae family, parasitic on birch and other trees. Its sterile conk is irregular in shape and looks like burnt charcoal. It is not the fungus's fruiting body but a sclerotium, or mass of mycelium, mostly black owing to the huge amounts of melanin it contains. It may be poisonous; eat at your own risk.
